FEDERAL:

URGENT!! Reject Thomas Farr’s Appointment to the Federal Judiciary:

The NC NAACP is traveling to Washington, DC, to lobby Congresspeople in Washington about Trump judicial nominee Thomas Farr. Farr’s nomination cleared the Senate judiciary committee, and now he is awaiting confirmation by the full Senate. Given Farr’s record in defending voter suppression and other attacks on civil rights, it is absolutely essential that we try to prevent him from getting a lifetime appointment. Farr has worked for decades to intimidate and disenfranchise black voters. He was likely involved in a scheme in which Jesse Helms’ campaign sent over 100,000 postcards to African-American voters, incorrectly telling them they were ineligible to vote and threatening them with jail time if they attempted to cast a ballot. He also participated in the creation of North Carolina’s voter photo ID law, which was struck down by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for discriminatory intent. In addition, he helped the GOP-controlled NCGA create the 2011 electoral maps that were rejected as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court because of racial gerrymandering. Let’s back our friends at the NC NAACP and make some noise about this truly awful judicial nomination.

Note: If you have some time, call some moderate GOP Senators, possibly Flake (AZ), Kennedy (LA), Collins (ME), Heller (NV), and Murkowski (AK). Tillis and Burr are likely all-in on Farr, but we can at least make their staffers’ ears buzz with a few hundred phone calls.

Script (Senate only):
Hi. I’m a constituent calling from ______ to urge Senator _______ to oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to a lifetime appointment to the United States District Court. Mr. Farr has a history of opposing workers, civil and voting rights. Specifically, he has supported legislation that would intimidate and disenfranchise black voters and even helped create North Carolina’s voter ID law, which was struck down by the courts. Finally, he was involved in designing the 2011 electoral maps that were rejected by the Supreme Court because of racial gerrymandering. I want Senator ________________ to oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to the federal bench. Thank you.

FEDERAL AND STATE:

Support the Survivors’ Bill of Rights

Raleigh native and Hollywood star Evan Rachel Wood testified before Congress on Monday, where she talked about the need for Congress to fund the Survivors’ Bill of Rights, a bill signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2016. The law gives sexual assault survivors the right to forensic medical exams with no cost to them; establishes that evidence collection kits, also known as “rape kits” are preserved for 20 years unless state statute sets a shorter limitation; gives survivors the right to access counselors; and gives survivors the ability to track their rape kit when and where it’s tested. But the law does not mandate any federal funding, so with that in mind, our second state and federal calls are going to be linked today. For Congress, we are going to call on them to provide federal funding for this important piece of legislation. And we’re going to follow that up with a call to the NCGA to pass a state-level Survivors’ Bill of Rights AND to provide adequate funding to support survivors of sexual assault.

Federal Script (House and Senate):
Hello, I am a constituent from ______________ calling to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to provide federal funding for the Survivors’ Bill of Rights. This law gives sexual assault survivors the right to forensic medical exams with no cost to them; establishes that evidence collection kits, also known as “rape kits” are preserved for 20 years; and gives survivors the right to access counselors, among other protections. Unfortunately, the federal government does not fund the mandate, and North Carolina, like many other states, has not stepped forward to provide funding for this law. I want Sen./Rep. ________________ to push for funding of this important legislation. Thank you.
