FEDERAL:

Gun Violence:

Seventeen people died in Florida yesterday because of the NRA’s stranglehold on the GOP.

SEVENTEEN PEOPLE—mostly children. Demand common sense gun laws. NOW.

GOP officials in Congress and elsewhere are sending “thoughts and prayers” to the victims’ families but still oppose common sense gun regulations that could help PREVENT these tragedies. And they’re STILL taking money from the NRA!

NOW is the time to call your elected officials and demand common sense gun regulation to keep people safe. Words are not enough---we need regulation NOW.

And after your calls, consider making a donation to one of the following organizations or to progressive political candidates who have made public statements calling for stricter gun control. Our two Senators aren’t up for reelection this term, but we could support Congressional candidates who stand up for gun safety.

Our two senators are in the top 5 in receiving money from the NRA. Richard Burr is at #2 with $6,986,620, and Thom Tillis comes in at #4 with $4,418,012! (via Center for Responsive Politics)

Script for Senate:

Hi, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent from zip code _______. I am devastated by the death toll from the shooting yesterday and I want Senator _______ to take action to enact common sense gun regulation IMMEDIATELY. I’m asking him to support the following:

1. S.1916 (Senate) to ban the use and sale of bump stocks, which effectively circumvent restrictions on automatic weapons

2. S.1923 - Background Check Completion Act of 2017, which closes a loophole that allows a gun sale if a background check is not completed after 72 hours, even if the buyer is not legally allowed to purchase a gun.

I also want him to vote AGAINST S.446, The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would endanger law enforcement and civilians. Will the senator be voting against this bill? Thank you for taking my call.

Script for House:

Hi, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent from zip code _______. I am devastated by the death toll from the shooting yesterday and I want Representative _______ to take action to enact common sense gun regulation IMMEDIATELY. I’m asking him/her to support:

1. H.R.3999 (House) to ban the use and sale of bump stocks, which effectively circumvent restrictions on automatic weapons

2. H.R.3464 - Background Check Completion Act of 2017, which closes a loophole that allows a gun sale if a background check is not completed after 72 hours, even if the buyer is not legally allowed to purchase a gun.

3. H.R.3987 - Protecting Americans from Gun Violence Act of 2017, which is a far-reaching and comprehensive bill that closes private sale and online sale loopholes, implements uniform background checks, funds research into gun deaths, and provides funding for police training and mental health care resources.

Will Representative ________ support these common sense reforms or continue to do nothing to help keep us safe from this epidemic? Thank you for taking my call.

Immigration/DACA:

Senate conservatives are reportedly cooking up an immigration bill that checks off all of the items on Trump’s wish list: (1) it would invest heavily in border security; (2) it would set the stage for quickly deporting unauthorized migrants; (3) it would dramatically reduce the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country annually; (4) it would end family-based migration; and (5) it would end the diversity lottery. The legislation would include a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, but that’s about it. We need to do better.

Script for Senate:
Hello, I am a constituent calling from zip code ________ to urge Sen. ___________ to oppose any immigration legislation that would end family-based migration and the diversity lottery. I am also concerned that the Senate is considering a dramatic reduction in the number of immigrants allowed into this country. Please support legislation that would provide DACA recipients with a path to citizenship, but the additional security measures and attempts to limit legal immigration are against the foundational spirit of our country, which is to welcome immigrants. Don’t waste billions of taxpayer dollars building a wall. Thank you for taking my call.
