Oppose the lifetime appointment of Thomas Farr.

Last year, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted down party lines 11-9, to clear North Carolina attorney Thomas Farr for a confirmation vote with the full Senate; however, Farr still has not been brought before the full Senate for a vote. If confirmed, Mr. Farr will be a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina. The Congressional Black Caucus submitted a letter to the Senate Judiciary committee alleging Mr. Farr has worked for decades to intimidate and disenfranchise black voters. Mr. Farr is also known to North Carolina’s for having defended North Carolina’s voter photo ID law, which was struck down by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for discriminatory intent. Senator Thom Tillis has specifically defended his record. Still, we must share our opposition of Mr. Farr with our Senators despite their clear support of him.

Script (Senate only):

Hi. I’m a constituent calling from ______ to urge Senator _______ to oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to a lifetime appointment to the United States District Court. Mr. Farr has a history of opposing workers, civil and voting rights. Specifically, he has supported legislation that would intimidate and disenfranchise black voters and even defended North Carolina’s voter ID law, which was struck down by the courts. I want Senator ________________ to oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to the federal bench.Thank you.

Oppose Trump’s Plan to Lift the Ban on Offshore Drilling:

Trump has announced plans to lift the ban on offshore drilling, a move that could lead to devastating environmental consequences. Aside from the huge risk of a massive oil spill that could devastate coastlines, the move further entrenches our reliance on fossil fuels. Fortunately, many governors--including our own Governor Cooper and even a number of Republicans--oppose offshore drilling off the coasts of their state. Florida GOP governor Rick Scott, in particular, is concerned about the possible impact on the tourism industry in his state, so GOP lawmakers MAY be willing to listen on this issue.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from _______________ to urge Sen./Rep. ________________ to oppose Trump’s plans to lift the ban on offshore drilling. The risks of a massive oil spill are too significant, and continuing to drill will just perpetuate our reliance on fossil fuels. Here in North Carolina, an oil spill could do huge damage to our tourism industry, in addition to the environmental damage we would face. This is a bipartisan issue. Many GOP governors have spoken out against offshore drilling so I want you to block any attempts to do offshore drilling. Thank you.

Gen X Water Contamination

Many of you have probably been following the ongoing story about the discovery of the contaminant GenX being found in drinking water in Wilmington, Jordan Lake, and a number of other locations in our state. Gen X is known to be toxic and can contaminate water far from the source. The Southern Environmental Law Center is asking people to call to oppose the draft legislation for addressing GenX (which they'll try to pass in the special session this week). SELC says that the legislation does not adequately fund DEQ and won't result in any meaningful action until 2019. Anyone can sign up to get bill alerts when GenX goes to a committee hearing or to a floor vote with links to contact info for all members by signing up here, courtesy of our friends at Kill the Bill: https://killthebill.lpages.co/judicial-bill-signups/

Hello, I am a constituent from [zip code] and I am calling to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to oppose the draft legislation to address the Gen X crisis. The current bill does not go far enough to work towards meaningful solutions. In particular, the bill starts studies that will not be complete until December, which means that no meaningful action will be done until 2019, leaving many people to deal with contaminated drinking water. The bill doesn’t adequately fund the DEQ, and will leave the staff with strained resources, and it does nothing to address the fact that Chemours is emitting Gen X into the air, which may be a major source of the contamination. Finally, the current draft legislation does not give the DEQ clear authority to set standards to protect our water. Clean drinking water is a necessity, and our state needs to be able to assure its citizens that it is doing everything possible to do that. Thank you for taking my call.

Gerrymandering Courts:

There is still quite a bit of buzz that the NC GOP is going to push legislation that would gerrymander judicial elections, which would, in effect, make those races even more partisan. Worse the long-term goal still appears to be a plan in which the NC state legislature would appoint judges rather than allowing citizens to elect them. This is, of course, a huge conflict of interest, allowing lawmakers to handpick the judges who would be ruling whether the laws they pass are constitutional. Please try to attend any NCGA session you can to make your presence felt, but you should also call your lawmakers and let them know that you do not support any plan that would take away fair judicial elections.

Hello, I am calling from [zip code] to urge Sen./Rep. ______________ to oppose any legislation that would result in gerrymandered judicial districts. The courts have already ruled that our legislative districts were gerrymandered with “surgical precision,” and this would be yet another attempt to silence the voices of North Carolina voters. I am also opposed to any attempt to revise the state constitution to allow lawmakers to appoint judges rather than keeping that right in the hands of North Carolina citizens. Thank you for taking my call.
