FEDERAL:

PROTECT MUELLER AND THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

The New York Times reported that in June of 2017, Trump ordered the firing of Mueller, but backed down when his White House lawyer threatened to quit over the decision.

It is the duty of Congress, as a separate co-equal branch of government, to guard against abuses of the Executive Branch. That’s why the framers of the Constitution created separation of powers. Our elected officials need to speak out and make clear that firing Mueller would be a red line that Trump must not cross. Senators can co-sponsor legislation to protect against a Mueller firing: S. 1735 led by Senators Graham and Booker, and S. 1741 led by Senators Coons and Tillis. Representatives in the House can co-sponsor H.R. 3771, led by Representatives Jones and Conyers.

Let's concentrate on Senator Burr & the House, because Tillis is the sponsor for one of the bi-partisan bills.

Script for Burr:

Hi, my name is ________ and I’m a constituent from zip code _______.

I'm calling to express my concern that Trump already attempted to fire Special Counselor Bob Mueller in order to end the Russia investigation, and may do so again, launching a constitutional crisis. Will Senator Burr speak out and tell the President that firing Mueller would be a red line he must not cross? It's the duty of Congress to guard against abuses of the Executive Branch. I would like to see Senator Burr issue a clear statement on this, and co-sponsor S.1735 or S.1741 (which was led by Senator Tillis & Coons), to show his support for protecting Mueller, and the investigation. I will be following to see is Senator Burr co-sponsors and speaks out on this.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Trump Calling for 20-Week Abortion Ban:

It has been buried beneath all of the other news, but Trump has quietly been working with Senate leaders to push for a vote on a 20-week abortion ban.He has apparently even targeted a group of Democratic Senators in red states, so this is pretty significant. It’s also potentially--an early step to try to erode or even overturn Roe Vs. Wade. If the bill passes the Senate, it will likely have a much clearer path in the House, so we need to call our Senators and tell them to oppose this unconstitutional piece of legislation.

Script for Senate:

(Adapted from Planned Parenthood) Hello, I am a constituent calling from zip code ____________ to urge Sen. ____________ to oppose planned legislation that would ban abortion after twenty weeks. This ban would take private health decisions out of the hands of patients and their doctors. The ban is also unconstitutional and deeply unpopular. It threatens the health of patients and violates their rights. Thank you for taking my call.

STATE:

Back Governor’s Efforts to Block the Proposed Fracked-Gas Pipeline through Eastern NC:

Governor Cooper wants to hear from his constituents on the proposed Atlantic Coast fracked-gas pipeline through eastern North Carolina. This pipeline would put at risk the drinking water of thousands of North Carolina residents and would threaten a number of rural communities. Duke Energy is pressuring Governor Cooper’s administration to approve the Pipeline this week. A decision could come any day. But the regulators charged with protecting North Carolina’s natural resources have not fully examined the potential impacts of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline on our air and water. Several of our members have talked with Hanna in the governor’s office, and she has stated that he WANTS to hear from us and that he is VERY receptive to our message. Let’s take him up on that and make some calls and emails. Light up those phones everyone!

Script for Cooper:

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ________________ to comment on the proposed oil pipeline that is being considered for eastern North Carolina. I would like Governor Cooper to compel the Department of Environmental Quality to hold public hearings on the information submitted to the agency in the past few months. There is no way to build this massive fracked-gas pipeline, which would cross hundreds of rivers, streams and wetlands, without harming our waters. The risk is too great, and as we have seen with other oil pipelines, spills and accidents are frequent and often catastrophic. The rural communities and the African-American and Native American citizens of eastern North Carolina deserve his utmost effort to protect their water. Thank you for taking my call.

Create an Independent Redistricting Commission:

As you likely know, federal courts confirmed what we already knew and ruled that North Carolina’s Congressional districts are unconstitutionally gerrymandered along partisan lines. Slate has a GREAT article talking about how Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been quietly establishing the grounds for this ruling for years, once again confirming her status as a matron saint of the Resistance. At any rate, Jeff Jackson, one of the great stars of our NCGA has a great bill calling for an independent redistricting commission. Let’s support that bill.

Script:

[Focus on the House and Senate for now] Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________ to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to support SB 702, which would establish an independent redistricting commission. An independent commission is vital to the process of restoring faith in our state legislature and would fulfill the goals of creating competitive districts that will make our representatives more responsive to the needs of voters. Please support SB 702 and ensure that voters have a voice on North Carolina’s elections. Thank you.
