FEDERAL:

DEMAND CONGRESS FORMALLY CENSURE TRUMP FOR HIS RACIST COMMENTS

As the nation celebrates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) and Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) will be introducing an unprecedented second censure resolution of Donald Trump. This time it will be for his racist comments in the Oval Office regarding American immigration policy.

The president called African nations and Haiti "sh*thole countries" and demanded to know why there couldn't be more immigration from Norway. Despite a vague denial he made these racist and repulsive comments, it was widely reported and corroborated by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and confirmed indirectly by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Durbin's words describing the incident were specific: "Trump said things that were hate-filled, vile and racist. He used those words, and he used them repeatedly."

This is the second time a resolution of censure has been introduced to draw a line in the sand about the conduct of the president. In August of 2017 Trump refused to repudiate acts of racists, Nazis and white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA that resulted in the murder of a young woman. Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation to censure Trump for failure to adequately condemn white domestic terrorism and hiring white supremacist sympathizers at White House staff.

Until the election of Donald Trump, presidential censures were extremely rare and have only been used a handful of times in congressional history. Members of Congress must speak out in unison to formally denounce Trump's racist and dishonorable behavior.

DACA:

Trump briefly opened the door on DACA before slamming it shut and continues to push for costly measures that would have little effect on immigration. His “shithole” comments tell us everything we need to know about his view of millions of immigrants. But with a deadline on DACA approaching quickly--the deadline is March 5th--we need to work to ensure that Dreamers are protected. Let’s use the tiny bit of leverage provided by Trump to call on our lawmakers to support a clean DACA bill before we turn to border security.

Script:

Hello, I am a constituent calling to urge Sen./Rep. ________________ to support a clean DREAM Act. DACA recipients came here as children and contributing to society, either by going to school or by working full-time. They are taxpayers and they have no committed any crimes while living in the US. Instead of sending them to a country they may never have even known, we need to grant them permanent residency and eventually citizenship. Action is urgently needed because if we continue to delay, it will create huge nightmares for immigration officials trying to clarify someone’s immigration status. Thank you for taking my call.

____________

STATE:

Create an Independent Redistricting Commission:

As you likely know, federal courts confirmed what we already knew and ruled that North Carolina’s Congressional districts are unconstitutionally gerrymandered along partisan lines. Slate has a GREAT article talking about how Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been quietly establishing the grounds for this ruling for years, once again confirming her status as a matron saint of the Resistance. At any rate, Jeff Jackson, one of the great stars of our NCGA has a great bill calling for an independent redistricting commission. Let’s support that bill.

Script:

[Focus on the House and Senate for now] Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________ to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to support SB 702, which would establish an independent redistricting commission. An independent commission is vital to the process of restoring faith in our state legislature and would fulfill the goals of creating competitive districts that will make our representatives more responsive to the needs of voters. Please support SB 702 and ensure that voters have a voice on North Carolina’s elections. Thank you.
