Net Neutrality Legislation (Federal Action):

(Adapted from Fight for the Future): 40 Senators have now signed on as sponsors for legislation that would undo the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality, which means that the Senate is guaranteed to vote on the bill. The Congressional Review Act (CRA) gives our elected officials 60 legislative days to overturn the FCC’s corrupt repeal of net neutrality with a simple majority vote in the Senate and House. But time is running out.

Now that a vote in the Senate is guaranteed, we need to flood Washington, DC with messages from constituents showing that Internet users are united against censorship, throttling, extra fees, and paid prioritization scams. Your calls to the Senate are most urgent, but please also call the House on this issue.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ___________ to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to support pending legislation that would restore net neutrality regulations. The FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules will allow Internet Service Providers to censor content, throttle or slow down web speeds, and to impose paid prioritization scams on consumers. Please support legislation that would overturn the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality.

Trump opened the door on a two-phase process in which Congress would pursue a clean DACA bill first before turning to border security. Members of the Freedom Caucus, including our very own Mark Meadows, have already said they still want to pursue enforcement first. But with a deadline on DACA approaching quickly--the deadline is March 5th--we need to work to ensure that Dreamers are protected. Let’s use the tiny bit of leverage provided by Trump to call on our lawmakers to support a clean DACA bill before we turn to border security.

Hello, I am a constituent calling to urge Sen./Rep. ________________ to support a clean DREAM Act. DACA recipients came here as children and contributing to society, either by going to school or by working full-time. They are taxpayers and they have no committed any crimes while living in the US. Instead of sending them to a country they may never have even known, we need to grant them permanent residency and eventually citizenship. Action is urgently needed because if we continue to delay, it will create huge nightmares for immigration officials trying to clarify someone’s immigration status. In addition, Trump has expressed willingness to focus on DACA first before we turn to issues of border security. Thank you for taking my call.

Net Neutrality Legislation (State Action):

In response to the FCC ruling that ended net neutrality protections, several states, including very red states like Nebraska, have begun introducing legislation that would restore those protections or that would provide additional protections for consumers. Net neutrality is absolutely vital to protecting consumers and is potentially a free speech issue if internet service providers decide they don’t like certain types of content. Because there is bipartisan support for net neutrality, it is actually possible that we might be able to achieve something here. For now, we can contact our NCGA reps and the governor’s office to signal broad support for net neutrality. I’ve been told that GOP Rep. Jason Saine would likely be an important contact for any legislation related to technology, so if anyone is in his district, please make an extra effort to call. This is probably going to be a long-term project.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from _________________ to encourage Sen./Rep./Gov. ___________________ to pursue legislation that would restore the net neutrality regulations that were in place prior to 2017. We need to restore net neutrality so that North Carolina citizens will not be charged different rates for different kinds of content. Without net neutrality regulations in place, Internet Service Providers could even block content that they dislike. Net neutrality is a bipartisan issue. In states ranging from California to Nebraska, lawmakers are introducing rules that would restore net neutrality. Maintaining net neutrality would also benefit the state economy and encourage development in the tech sector. Thank you for taking my call.

The big buzz is obviously the court ruling that determined that our Congressional districts were illegally drawn along partisan lines and ordered that districts be redrawn BEFORE the upcoming House elections. Let’s make sure our reps know that we are monitoring their behavior when it comes to crafting Congressional districts.

Hello, I am calling from [zip code] to urge Sen./Rep. ______________ to respect the ruling made in federal court that determined that our Congressional districts are unconstitutional. It’s outrageous that Republican lawmakers were openly bragging about making the districts as non-competitive as possible. We need to make our elections as competitive as possible by drawing districts without partisan considerations. Thank you for taking my call.
