A Ten Day Waiver for the Jones Act Is not Enough
On Thursday, Trump belatedly waived the oppressive Jones Act for ten days, allowing critical relief to flow to Puerto Rico, but this window is too short. The administration appears to putting the concerns of certain players in the shipping industry before the dire needs of our fellow citizens who are enduring unimaginable deprivation and suffering. Senators McCain and Lee are introducing legislation that would permanently exempt Puerto Rico from the antiquated Jones Act. Let’s get behind this so that politics does not get in the way of humanitarian aid. Background:
I am a constituent calling from ___________ to urge Rep./Sen. _______________ to support legislation proposed by Senators McCain and Lee that would permanently exempt Puerto Rico from the Jones Act. President Trump’s ten-day waiver is not adequate. Please make sure that Puerto Rico receives all the help it can get during this trying time. Thanks for taking my call.
Prevent the GOP From Gutting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
The GOP is covertly working a bill through Congress that would essentially gut major provisions of the Consumer Protection Bureau. The GOP bill would protect financial companies from class-action lawsuits and deny consumers a day in court. The rule is among the most consequential actions the CFPB has taken since its founding. They’re trying to push the bill this week because next week, executives from Wells Fargo and Equifax will be testifying before Congressional committees, and they don’t want to deal with the public embarrassment of giving a huge gift to financial companies while they are under the public spotlight. Notably Lindsey Graham opposes this bill, and other GOPers appear to be on the fence. But McConnell is still trying to whip the votes and force it through.
Hello, I am a constituent calling from ____________________. I want Sen./Rep. ____________________ to oppose Mitch McConnell’s efforts to rescind a provision of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that makes it easier for consumers to engage in class-action lawsuits against financial companies that act against their interests. With the security breach at Equifax and the scandals at Wells Fargo, consumers need the ability to fight back against these companies. Big financial institutions have shown repeatedly that they cannot be trusted, so these regulations are absolutely crucial. Thank you for taking my call.

Oppose a Veto of a Very Bad Enviro Bill, HB 56
Amid the controversy over tainted drinking water in North Carolina from the little-studied but carcinogenic compound GenX, the General Assembly is poised to override Governor Cooper’s veto of this terrible legislation. In his veto, Cooper wrote:
“Clean water is critical for our health and our economy and this legislation fails to appropriate any needed funds to departments in state government charged with setting standards and enforcing laws to prevent illegal chemical discharges into rivers used for drinking water. In addition, it weakens protection from river pollution and landfills and repeals a local plastic bag ban supported by local governments and businesses that was passed to protect the environment.”
We could not have summarized why this is a terrible bill any better. Please let your reps know where you stand on this bill. Bill text, veto text, and history: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascr…/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl…
I am a constituent calling from ________ to urge Rep./Sen. __________ to let Governor Cooper’s veto of HB 56 stand. This is a bill that underfunds state environmental agencies charged with protecting our drinking water and other areas vitals to our health. It also rescinds a ban on plastic bags on the Outer Banks that was originally passed in conjunction with local leaders and businesses. Thanks for taking my call.

The Alabama Senate race has taken shape and the racist homophobe Roy Moore won the GOP primary. Moore, famously, has twice been removed from the position of Chief Justice of Alabama for failing to uphold the Constitution. The good news is that the Democratic candidate seems to have a legitimate shot at winning the Senate race. We’re still waiting for some polling, but the race has some potential. This is where we can come in. The Jones for Senate website is seeking donations and recruiting volunteers (including people willing to phonebank). Moore is a dangerous theocratic demagogue who wants to impose “Christian” law (which would include making homosexuality a crime). Let’s do what we can to stop Moore from getting elected to the Senate: https://dougjonesforsenate.com/.
