FEDERAL:

Oppose the Nomination of Sam Clovis:

Donald Trump picked Clovis to be chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture despite his having zero training as a scientist. But with Trump, we’ve gotten used to it: an Amway billionaire leads our schools, a brain surgeon is at HUD, and does an oilman leads State. However, the main reason to oppose Clovis is that he as an unabashed homophobe, calling the “lifestyle” a “choice.” Read the background material included for a litany of offensive ideas from this man. Bannon is gone, and rallies in Boston and around the country demonstrate that Americans are sick and tired of bigotry. So why would the Senate vote to confirm yet another person with extreme and offensive views? Surely there are hundreds of other well qualified candidates from which to choose. Tell the Senate to take a stand for a change. We have seen their tweets and comments disavowing hate. Now it’s time for them to walk the walk and reject Sam Clovis. Background:

SCRIPT:

I am a constituent calling from _________ to oppose the nomination of Sam Clovis as chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture. In addition to having no experience or training as a scientist, Clovis is an unabashed bigot. His views are homophobic and fall well outside the mainstream of public opinion. In the wake of Charlottesville, many Republican lawmakers disavowed hate. Confirming Clovis will make a mockery of these views and will in fact confirm Senator ___________’s complicity in bigotry and hate.

#TrumpResign Is Trending on Twitter. Let’s Keep it Going:

This action may seem trivial, but given that Twitter has been elevated to the status of official mouthpiece of the White House, it seems fitting that the medium should be turned against the Bigot-in-Chief. We know nothing gets under his skin like criticism, and this time he can’t blame it on the “fake” news media! If you have Twitter, simply write a heartfelt message to The Donald @realDonaldTrump, add the hashtag #TrumpResign, and tag some friends. Also tag @RISETogether_NC so our Twitter minions can spread the word. Adding a picture let’s you tag up to ten friends without using up those precious 140 characters. Also consider tagging Stronger NC, Together We Will, and your local Indivisible group as well. It is easy to search their handles right inside the app.

STATE:

Redistricting:

The legislature has put forward new maps to address court orders, but we find them lacking, especially in data. On Monday, redistricting committee chair David Lewis took to Twitter, and all but admitted that map making revealed inevitable political biases. This is why at this critical point in our state, as the tyranny of one party skews our politics in an extreme direction, we must show up at Tuesday’s meetings across the state, and we must submit public comments. When you attend or write, demand that rationales and data be provided with new maps. When the highest court in the land calls your maps racist, a new and transparent approach is needed. Mathematicians have models and methods that draw fair maps. Why isn’t the committee using them? We think we know: this is all part of the GOP’s plan to maintain its stranglehold on the state. We just want a fair fight at the ballot box. Background:
