FEDERAL:

Treason? Collusion? “I Love it!”

If you are reading this, you are well aware of the explosive email chain revealed yesterday that implicates members of the President’s inner circle in highly suspect behavior with a Russian operative. Exactly who told what when, and exactly for whom this Russian lawyer works are all sketchy for now, but this is clear evidence that the Trump team was open to using dirty tricks provided by an enemy foreign power. It is no secret in the activist community that the impeachment of Donald Trump is the only satisfactory outcome to this scandal, not to mention his unsavory ethical entanglements, his war on the press, cozying up to foreign dictators. We could go on…. But what is the most effective ask of our elected officials right now? Strident Democrats on the Hill are making tons of noise, while almost every Republican lawmaker keeps pointing to the “real” issues, such as health care, tax reform, and all the rest of the everyday right-wing plan to exacerbate already record inequality in this country. Yet, these same legislators were ready to call out Obama for playing golf (!) and even for Michelle’s outfits. We demand to hear more from our representatives. Where is the outrage, condemnation, high-minded patriotism now? As citizens, we should be deeply disturbed that in the midst of a truly unprecedented scandal that unfolds at dizzying speed, Congress wants to hand legislation to Trump to sign? As far as we can tell, Trump is only fit to sign his guilty plea when he finally enters it to a federal judge. In the meantime, we are going to light up our representatives’ phones and tell them exactly what we think of this administration.

SCRIPT:

I am a constituent calling from _______ to urge Rep./Sen. ________ to please speak out about the Trump team’s apparent shattering of norms and laws governing colluding with foreign powers in elections. I want to know that my representatives are concerned about free and fair elections. I have grave doubts about the legitimacy of the entire executive branch, and I would appreciate having those doubts given voice in Washington. Thanks for taking my call.

Health Care, Again. Sigh.

There goes Richard Burr’s golf vacation: Mitch McConnell has shortened the August recess so that Congress can put the finishing touches on gutting health care, enacting tax giveaways for the wealthy, and God knows what else. He has also promised next week as the do or die for the hated BCRA, which has now been shown by independent groups to likely cost lower income families $2,500 on average while giving some $50,000 in tax breaks to those earning over $1 million. Trying to appease the moderate and conservative wings of the GOP once seemed impossible, but Paul Ryan did it in the House. We need to beware of Republican Senators who make a lot of noise about opposition, but who may cave in the end. Here in North Carolina, we need to put relentless pressure on Tillis and Burr to let them–and the world–know that we demand better from them, and for us, when it comes to high-quality, affordable health care. They may not listen, but we will let the record be utterly clear about what is in their proposal, and our opposition to it. Recent events at Tillis’ offices and elsewhere have shown that protesters are getting under his skin. Now let’s back up that hard work on the ground with a barrage of calls, emails, and faxes.

I am a constituent calling from ________ to urge Senator __________ to oppose the BCRA. This bill would strip coverage from millions, raise costs for the poor and the elderly, drastically affect veterans and the disabled, all the while giving millions in unnecessary tax breaks to the wealthy. Thank you for recording my call.

STATE:

NCGA: Redraw Those Maps Now, and Don’t Legislate Until You Do:

On Tuesday, the NC NAACP asked a court in Greensboro to take control of state map making away from the legislature and put it in the hands of an independently appointed “master.” Illegal, race-based gerrymandering has given us outrageous laws, skimpy budgets, and a brazen attitude from right-wing extremists in Raleigh. Since the legislature was constituted illegally, we think any laws it passed are tainted, and are therefore demanding two things. 1) An immediate re-drawing of legislative districts by an independent entity, and 2) an immediate cessation of all law making until fair districts are in place and new elections are held. Legislators are not in session, so email contact is best.

SCRIPT FOR EMAIL:

I am a constituent writing from ________ to demand that new legislative districts be created immediately, as per court order, and not by the legislature itself. Rather, I join the state NAACP in calling for an independent entity to draw new maps. Furthermore, since the legislature itself was constituted illegally, I demand that you cease all law making until after special elections occur. Thank you for your time.
