Health Care:

Is the Senate health care bill in trouble? That depends on what you read. Certainly, key GOP Senators are wavering in their support, and many observers are baffled by the party’s strategy. And for some conservatives, this bill doesn’t go far enough in stripping away all vestiges of Obamacare. Don’t be fooled. The House plan was pronounced dead, and activists on the left popped champagne corks, only to see the zombie AHCA rise from the dead. Paul Ryan pulled that off, and this time the much savvier Mitch McConnell is at the helm. After the holiday, they may be counting on a lull in attention. We know that our Senators are probably hopeless, but that doesn’t mean we stop calling, emailing, and faxing. Ask for their policy aides, pepper staffers with pointed questions. Demand constituent meetings and town halls. Above all, let the world know, in a thunderous voice, that our Senators are avoiding answering tough questions from their voters about a bill that would devastate many, many lives.

I am a constituent calling from ________ to demand answers from Senator _______ about the GOP health plan. How does the Senator plan to give adequate coverage to veterans, the elderly, those in poverty, people out of work, or between jobs? Please let the Senator know that I am opposed to this plan. Thank you for recording my message.

Russia Sanctions

A few weeks ago, the Senate passed a bill imposing some serious sanction against Russia by a 98-2 margin–an unmistakable bipartisan statement against Russia’s intervention in our political system. However, the bill has stalled in the House, in part because a Texas Congressman, Pete Sessions (R-ExxonMobil) is concerned about how the bill will affect their constituents, or more likely, their donors. We need to send a strong message that we won’t tolerate Russia meddling in our elections.

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ______________ to urge Rep. _______________ to vote for economic sanctions to be imposed on Russia for meddling in the 2016 election. While the bill is currently stalled in committee, I would like to see Rep. _____________ aggressively push for a vote so that we can send a clear message to Russia and the rest of the international community. Thank you for taking my call.

Seismic Blasting:

Surprise, surprise, Trump and his fossil fuel cronies are coming for our oil, and this time they want to authorize the use of a hideous technique to find it offshore. It’s called seismic blasting, and it pretty much deafens any marine mammal or other animal within earshot, causing those animals to suffer and often die hideous deaths. And do we even want drilling off of our precious Outer Banks? How about invest in wind and solar? That is a topic under serious scrutiny in our state right now, to which your action team will return at a later date. For now, please contact the feds at the email found below, but also your state representatives (yes, they are on recess, but they have email like the rest of us), and Governor Cooper. The comment period is wrapping up, so please don’t hesitate.

I am a concerned North Carolinian writing to strongly object to the proposal to allow seismic blasting off of our coasts. This practice wreaks absolute havoc with marine animals. Our beaches and ocean ecosystems are precious and must be preserved. Thanks for recording my comment.
