FEDERAL:

THE HOUSE WILL VOTE ON THE FINANCIAL CHOICE ACT (H.R.10), TODAY!

The so-called "Financial CHOICE Act," introduced in April 2017 by Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), is a bill SCHEDULED FOR A VOTE IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TODAY! Although the Act’s sponsors tout it as being focused on financial reform and Wall Street accountability, in reality it eliminates major consumer safeguards created in the wake of the disastrous financial crisis of 2008. The bill would weaken regulatory powers that pre-date the 2010 Dodd-Frank Act, and eliminate long-standing rights of shareholders to hold companies accountable for corporate misbehavior.

SCRIPT FOR HOUSE:

Hi. My name is _____, from zip code ______. I'm calling to strongly urge Representative _______ to vote NO on the FInancial CHOICE Act, H.R. 10. This bill would make it easier for big banks and predatory lenders to rip people off, and it would increase the likelihood of another financial crisis. A vote for this bill is a vote for Wall Street and predatory lenders and a vote against his/her constituents. I expect Representative ______ to vote against H.R. 10. I will be watching to see if he/she will stand with Wall Street or with me. Thank you.

STATE:

Fair Voting Districts Now!

In a stunning development Wednesday, Governor Cooper called the North Carolina legislature into a special 14-day session for the express purpose of drawing new legislative maps. We have talked about it, written about it, called about it, educated ourselves and others about the problem of gerrymandering and the polarization and extremism that have flourished under its stranglehold. Court after court continues to strike our districts down as illegal and race-based. There are several excellent suggestions currently on the floor of the legislature; recently we have been pushing HB 674, a bill calling for an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution that would enshrine independent redistricting into the statutes.

SCRIPT:

I am a constituent calling from _______ to urge Rep./Sen. To swiftly remedy our illegal voting districts. Court after court has found our gerrymandering lines unconstitutional. Please create fair districts as well as a mechanism to ensure independent redistricting. Thanks for taking my call.
