Bored by Health Care? THIS Is the Time to Act

If you are despondent that “calls don’t work” or think “nobody’s listening,” you are playing right to the strategy of Senate GOP leaders to keep their health bill secret. Mitch McConnell has surmised that avoiding public scrutiny is the best way to avoid the hue and cry let out by the public over the House version of the AHCA. Giving up calling is the last thing we should do. Many credible pundits figure that some Republicans–maybe even McConnell himself–just want to bring the bill to a vote, even if they lose. At least that will provide them some political cover for trying, but they won’t be left with the fallout of millions of uninsured people. What might push Senators over the line from a yes to a no vote? Constituent pressure!

Washington Post story:

I am a constituent calling from _______ to urge Sen. _________ to oppose the Senate plan to dismantle health care as we know it. This bill has been crafted in utter secrecy, an affront to every norm and democratic ideal of lawmaking. A topic so complex with such wide-ranging implications should be discussed an committee at length. If this plan resembles the House version, which cuts 23 million people off of insurance, it should be opposed. And if a full bill is rolled out with debate, comment, or amendment, it should be opposed.

We must stand with and fight for Minerva. She came here seeking safety and special education for her oldest son who is blind as a result of cancer. Now, she is the head of the household for her oldest son and two youngest, who are three and six, and is facing deportation at the end of this month. No mother or child should have to go through this trauma. Minerva has no criminal record. She is simply a devoted, loving mother who, like many, wants the best for her kids. Her children cannot afford to lose their mother. Let our Senators know that we expect them to stand with Minerva.

Hi, My name is ____ and I am calling about Minerva Garcia who is currently living in Winston-Salem. I am calling because I want Senator____ to personally request that ICE stays Minverva's deportation and to continue granting her deferrals until the government creates a way for her to obtain legal status.  Minerva is an exemplary mother with no criminal record who makes our community a better place. Don’t let her blind 21 year old son and two young sons suffer any longer with the thought of losing their mother and caretaker. Thank you.

Last Chance on the NC Budget:

“While we wait for details, the budget outlined by legislative leaders continues to shortchange education, economic development, and middle class families in favor of more tax giveaways that help the wealthy and large corporations,” a spokesperson for Governor Cooper said of the freshly reconciled NC budget. The Senate could vote on this plan as early as Tuesday, so make those calls! Teacher pay has been increased, but the raises are paltry compared with the national average.

Watch an angry Cooper address the media:

I am a constituent calling from _______ to urge Rep./Sen. ______ to oppose the proposed North Carolina budget. We need to spend more on education and families and stop giving tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. Thanks for taking my call.
