Tax Bill: This is Not a Drill!

The vote on the tax bill is scheduled for tomorrow. The bill is awful. We know it’s awful. But many of the updates--including the Corker kickback--make the bill even worse. Corker and 14 other GOP Senators stand to personally benefit from the most recent changes that give tax breaks on so-called “pass-through” income (our good buddy “Sleepy” George Holding also benefits from this provision). Marco Rubio’s child tax credit revisions are bogus and end up hurting kids more in the long run. We have to keep the pressure on. It’s full court press time. Call. Tweet. Fax. If you have access to a sky writer, try that, too.

Script:

Hi, my name is ________ from zip code _____________ and I am calling to urge Sen./Rep. _______________ to vote against HR 1, the tax bill. The bill will hurt working families, who will not see a significant tax break. The increases to the deficit will also threaten vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. It will also undermine the Affordable Care Act by taking health insurance away from millions of Americans. Please vote against this bill. Thank you.

[IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied]

Renew CHIP:

Congress STILL hasn’t reauthorized funding for CHIP, which means that states are going to run out of funding soon. I’m hearing horror stories from medical providers who are telling me that their patients cannot schedule needed appointments because they will not be able to cover the costs of a doctor’s visit.

SCRIPT:

Hello. My name is _________ calling from zip code ________ to encourage Sen./Rep. ________ to support reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program immediately, using a bipartisan approach. The proposal to fund CHIP by taking money from the Affordable Care Act and weakening Medicare is insufficient. We need a sensible resolution soon. Parents of children in North Carolina are already facing difficult decisions about their children’s healthcare because they cannot afford to pay for their medical expenses out of pocket. Not passing CHIP will do tremendous harm to families right here in our state and our district. Thanks for taking my call.

Fox News Boycotts:

(h/t to Andrea Biondi!) We all know that Fox News is involved in the disinformation game. They’ve been peddling right-wing propaganda for years, and Sean Hannity--who has always been a hack--is now taking the lead on discrediting Robert Mueller’s investigation of the Trump Team. We need to remind some of Fox’s sponsors that we will be boycotting them until they pull their advertisements from Fox News broadcasts. I recommend focusing on the national companies first, but feel free to call or email the PR people from the companies listed on the Fox News Boycott website: http://foxnewsboycott.com/fox-news-sponsors/fox-sponsors-a-l/

Basic script:

Hello, I am a concerned customer calling to let you know that your company is advertising on Fox News. Were you aware of this? [Wait for answer]. I’m concerned because Fox News engages in biased coverage. They’ve also covered for serial sexual abusers and now they have begun attacking some of the brave women who have come forward to say that they were victims of sexual harassment in their workplaces. I don’t want my hard-earned money to support this kind of biased news coverage, so unless your company stops advertising on Fox News, I will no longer buy your product, and I will encourage others in my community to do the same. Thank you.
