FEDERAL:

Stop the Yemeni Genocide:

More than 50,000 children expected to die of starvation and disease by end of year in Yemen. Please take action by calling your Rep with this call script for Stop Supporting the War in Yemen: Support House Congressional Resolution 81.

Script:

Hello, I am a constituent of Rep./Sen. _______________ and I am calling to ask [him/her] to support H.Con.Res. 81 to stop U.S. assistance for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. Seven million people are facing the threat of famine as the result of our taxpayer dollars supporting a Saudi-led war in Yemen. As your constituent, I urge you to take strong action against American complicity in the Saudi-led war in Yemen. We cannot sit by while our government dollars increase suffering in a country devastated by conflict, cholera, and famine. Thank you for taking my call.

Gun Background Check Legislation:

A bipartisan group of Senators is sponsoring a bill that would strengthen our gun background check system, making it more difficult for felons, domestic abusers, and others who are ineligible to get access to guns. Mostly, the bill simply beefs up reporting requirements for the National Instant Background Check System and incentivizes agencies and states to report information by blocking bonus pay for political appointees who fail to report information from the states. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal are two of the main Democratic co-sponsors, and Tim Scott and John Cornyn are the leading Republicans behind the bill, so it may actually have a chance in the Senate. It’s a small step, but it is a step in the right direction. While we are calling, we can also ask the Senators to support Amy Klobuchar’s bill that would close the “domestic violence loophole” and prevent dating partners convicted of domestic violence or a stalking crime from being able to buy guns.

Script:

Hello, I am a constituent calling from __________________ to ask Sen./Rep. ____________________ to support two key pieces of gun legislation. First, I want you to support the Murphy/Cornyn bill that would strengthen the reporting requirements for the National Instant Background Check System. Second, I want you to support Amy Klobuchar’s Senate Bill 1539, the Protecting Domestic Violence and Stalking Victims Act of 2017, a bill that would protect victims of domestic abuse by barring convicted stalkers and people who have abused their dating partners from buying or owning firearms. Many mass shooters, including the one in Sutherland Springs, have been revealed to be domestic abusers, so reducing their access to dangerous firearms would potentially save lives. Thank you for taking my call.

Block Unqualified Judicial Nominee Brett J. Talley

Trump has nominated Brett J. Talley to a lifetime seat on the Federal Court in Alabama. Talley is unqualified by almost every measure. He has never tried a case, has practiced law for only three years, and was unanimously rated as “unqualified” by the American Bar Association. He is best known as a conservative blogger who openly opposed Hillary Clinton and endorsed the NRA. He should not be given a permanent seat on the federal bench. Talley has already been passed through by the Senate Judiciary Committee on partisan lines. But let’s push our Senators to reject his nomination.

Script (Senate only):

Hello, I am a constituent calling from _______________to urge Sen. ___________________ to oppose the nomination of Brett J. Talley to the federal bench. Talley is not qualified to be a federal judge. His record as a political blogger shows that he will be incapable of being impartial. More crucially, he does not have enough experience for being a federal judge. He has never tried a case and the American Bar Association has also rated him as unqualified. I want Senator ________________ to vote against Brett Talley to be seated as a federal judge.

Postcard Action for Alabama Special Election

5 Calls has created a postcard tool you can use to send out pre-stamped, pre-addressed postcards reminding people to vote in the Alabama Senate special election on December 12. For $5, you’ll get five pre-addressed and stamped postcards, and you can write a personalized message and then mail them out. The main goal is to remind people of when to vote (which, yes, you’d think people would remember, but still). They also have bulk pricing for sets of 50 or 100 postcards, if anyone wants to host an event: https://5calls.org/postcards

STATE/LOCAL:

Protect North Carolina from the Atlantic Coast Pipeline:

With the news about the Keystone Pipeline, it is worth thinking about the pipeline being developed in our backyard. Dominion & Duke is planning to build a fracked gas compressor station in Northampton County. These stations are dangerous. They could catch fire or even explode. There are also health hazards associated with living near the station--including a higher risk of developing asthma. The Sierra Club is orchestrating an email writing campaign to the Department of Natural Resources try to stop the compressor station. You can join their efforts here: https://sierra.secure.force.com/actions/National?actionId=AR0093131
