Keep Fighting the Tax Bill:

The Senate tax bill keeps getting worse. They worked in a provision that would essentially repeal the ACA by doing away with the individual mandate. Yesterday, they added a provision (probably to keep Murkowski on board) that would allow drilling in ANWR. But public pressure on the tax bill is working! Wisconsin GOP Senator Ron Johnson came out publicly today in opposition to the Tax Scam Bill. He called the bill deceptive and said that both the House and Senate bills fail to offer protections that would bring jobs back to the U.S.

Obviously, this may be a negotiating ploy, but at least in the near term, one GOP Senator is in the “no” column. We only need a few more to come out to kill the bill. The House bill continues to be a non-starter, too, and we need to remind our reps about that. Make those calls and make sure OUR Senators know they will face ruthless public opposition if they continue to support a bill that extorts billions of dollars from the middle class and gives that cash to their wealthy donors. I’ve added a basic script below, but feel free to improvise, and let us now in the comments that you have called (and what your biggest concerns about the bill are). Light up those phones, everyone!

Senate Script:

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ________________ to urge Sen. ________________ to oppose the Senate tax bill. The bill will take healthcare away from millions of Americans and raise premiums for millions of others, all so that billionaires can have tax cuts. The bill also phases out most tax cuts for the middle class in just a few years while making corporate tax cuts permanent. I am also concerned that the bill would enable drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. Thank you for taking my call.

House Script:

Hello, I am a constituent calling to tell Rep. _________________ not to support the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The bill will provide enormous tax cuts for the wealthy while also cutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. I’m opposed to the fact that the bill eliminates the deductions for medical expenses, cuts the deduction for state and local taxes paid, caps the mortgage interest deduction, and eliminates the student loan interest deduction. I’m also concerned that the bill will allow graduate student tuition waivers to be taxed. All of these provisions will hurt middle-class families while giving wealthy people massive tax breaks. This is a dangerous and destructive bill, and I want Rep. _______________ to vote against it.

Stop Trump from Launching a Preemptive Nuclear Attack:

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led by Republican Bob Corker, met this week to discuss ways to limit Trump’s ability to engage in a preemptive nuclear attack. Given that Trump has exchanged insults with Kim Jong Un and threatened to unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea, it’s unclear whether Trump has an awareness of the consequences of his words and actions. Although the committee has not proposed a specific legislative answer, both Ted Lieu in the House and Ed Markey in the Senate have proposed bills that would prohibit the president from launching a preemptive nuclear strike without a declaration of war by Congress. Let’s send a message that we want Congressional oversight over the President’s ability to make a unilateral decision that could cost millions of lives.

Script:

Hello, I am a constituent from __________________ and I want Sen./Rep. ___________________ to support the Lieu-Markey bill that would prohibit the president from launching a preemptive nuclear strike without a declaration of war by Congress. Trump has shown that he is prone to rash decision making. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has expressed concern about the possibility of a president making a hasty decision that could have such devastating consequences. We need to reinforce checks on the executive branch’s authority to wage war. Thank you for taking my call.
