FEDERAL:

Minimize Gun Violence:

Pray if you must, do your moment of silence, attend a vigil. But mass shootings like what we witnessed in Las Vegas will not stop unless we get serious about gun laws in this country. The only way a lone gunman could inflict that much carnage is with military-grade assault weapons. Why are these legal? Does anyone need that kind of firepower to defend their home or person? Are rifles like that used for hunting? We know that the NRA has for years donated millions to lawmakers on the state and federal level to craft ever more extreme gun laws. Enough. Today we ask you to call Congress and demand for more stringent background checks, the closing to gun show loopholes that make it laughably easy to purchase dangerous firearms, and a complete ban on assault-style weapons. We are also going to ask staffers point blank about NRA funding.

SCRIPT:
I am a constituent calling from __________ to urge Rep./Sen. ___________ to immediately sponsor legislation to 1) make background checks for firearms’ sales more stringent, 2) close gun show loopholes, and 3) completely ban assault-style weapons. In the light of the Las Vegas shooting, the latest in a sickening string of escalating mass shootings, what continued justification can there be for opposing these measures? In addition, I demand to know if Rep./Sen. _________ receives funding from the NRA and if so, demand a justification for accepting these contributions. Thanks for taking my call.

Why Do We Give Military Aid to Egypt?

Ever since the crackdown in Egypt after the uprising of the Arab Spring, strongman Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has detained journalists, rounded up and repressed members of the LGBT community, and generally denied basic civil rights to many citizens. Not surprisingly, he is a favorite of Trump’s, and the United States routinely arms Egypt to the teeth, under the rationale that a repressive dictatorship is better than an anti-American theocracy like Iran. They are bad guys, but they are our bad guys. However, the Trump administration seems to have dropped even the pretense of putting human rights pressure on our autocratic allies. Now it turns out that even with our massive aid, the Egyptians have been buying additional arms from North Korea! This shatters the trust allies have not to aid and comfort mutual enemies, and it violates international sanctions as well. Will anyone in Congress speak out against Egypt and hold it accountable? I am a constituent calling from _________ to urge Rep./Sen. __________ to do what it takes to hold Egypt accountable for human rights abuses against journalists and members of the LGBT community and for buying arms from North Korea. Allies must abide by a minimum standard of human rights and should certainly not break international sanctions. Thanks for taking my call.
