Obamacare Subsidies

Trump has issued an executive order that would end subsidies to insurance companies that help to control the costs of health insurance. This move will likely lead to soaring premiums for millions of Americans. These subsidies go to insurance companies to offset the cost of reducing out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles and co-payments for low-income customers. The American Medical Association, The National Governors Association, and dozens of other groups have called on Congress to restore these payments.

Script:

Hello, I am a constituent calling from ________________. I want Sen./Rep. ___________________ to support legislation that would restore the government subsidies that help to cover insurance costs for low-income families. Ending these subsidies will destabilize insurance markets and will drive up premiums and co-payments for millions of Americans. In fact, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that premiums will increase by 20 percent next year, costs that many middle-class families cannot afford. It is absolutely vital that Congress vote to restore these health insurance subsidies. Thank you for taking my call.

Gun Safety

For the first time in ages, there was at least some momentum toward enacting gun safety legislation, but people’s memories are now fading fast. We need to keep pushing this issue and reminding our lawmakers that pro-gun extremists are a small minority in this country. Remember regulating guns is not the same thing as infringing on people’s rights to own them.

SCRIPT:

I am a constituent calling from __________ to urge Rep./Sen. ___________ to immediately sponsor legislation to 1) make background checks for firearms’ sales more stringent, 2) close gun show loopholes, 3) place a limit of ten rounds on magazine sizes, and 4) ban so-called bump stocks that cause semiautomatic rifles to act like automatic weapons. By taking a few simple steps, we can reduce gun violence without infringing on someone’s right to bear arms. Thanks for taking my call.
